Kata

For who: People into water sports, swimming, great for family, couples, people seeking romantic retreat, individuals seeking for solitude.

Good for: Couples, family, kids, surfing, sun bathing, watching the sun rise and set. Slower pace than Patong and Karon.

Avoid:
– If you want to shop, you will need to head over to Patong for bigger shopping selections.
– If you are looking to party with loud music and seeking other adult entertainment (GoGo).
– Reports by other travelers of smelly and contaminated waste being released into the water between Kata and Karon beach.

Karon

For who: People into water sports, swimming, great for family, couples, people seeking a romantic retreat, individuals seeking for solitude.

Good for: Excellent snorkeling (at the south end), families, relaxing, viewing incredible sunsets, sun bathing, water sports, swimming, beach volleyballs.

Avoid:
– If you want to shop, you will need to head over to Patong for bigger selections.
– If you are looking to party with loud music and seeking other adult entertainment (GoGo).

——————

Patong

For who: Party goers, budget travelers, lively nightlife, shoppers, lots of adult entertainment such as GoGo bars, beer bars and pubs.

Good for: Party, shopping, nightlife, GoGo, adult entertainment.

Avoid:
– If you are looking for a peaceful and quiet neighborhood. This area is very crowded with many things to do, along with many Thai vendors trying to sell you things you might not want or need.
– If you don’t want to stay in a tourist hot spot. This area is equivalent to Walking Street in Pattaya, it is the extreme party and adult entertainment area.
– The beach is ok, can be too crowded, not the greatest or the best beach on the island. Maybe 30 years ago it was a beautiful beach, not so much today.

The best place to stay is patong tower….has seaview apartments…ocean facing high floors with own kitchen large balconys..some with jaccuzi…
Or slightly cheaper mountain view apartments. ..5 min walk to bangla rd restaurants etc…

I was a Backpacker way back in 1978. Stayed in Patong for a month. It was just a dirt road with a few small Beach Bars ,restaurants and some very cheap accommodations. You could buy a fish from the fisherman and take it to one of the open air restaurants right on the beach and they would cook it for you. Thailand was such a different place back then. Thanks for the video.
